What is most striking are the seemingly endless creative twists and turns that Cifelli is able to conjure while continuously exploring the depths of his ensemble. Combining the big band experience with the energy of a small group of soloists, the Nonet has a big sound on ensemble passages, and yet it's agile in its ability to tackle the complex arrangements. Jim Cifelli's second outing leading his New York Nonet is a lush landscape of rich textures and dynamic extremes. The result is a sonic painting that must be experienced over and over, each time uncovering more details than the last.
Cifelli composed the majority of the works, including the blazing opener "Undercurrent," which showcases the band's tight interaction and many stellar soloists. Bassist Mary Ann McSweeney contributes the floating "Without Changes," a caressing piece that features fine work by saxophonist Cliff Lyons and trombonist Pete McGuinness.
