This brief compilation has both of those songs, plus "I Love You So," the strong flip side of "Gee," and given that the Artist were woefully under-recorded, it probably has all that casual listeners will need. A little rawer and rougher than the doo wop groups that would follow them, the Artist released eight singles (16 sides) on the Rama Records label between 1952 and 1954, then disbanded after their last single, "Sweet Sue," an amped-up remake of the Earl Burnett hit from 1928, failed to generate much interest with the public. An early Harlem street corner harmony group, the Artist arguably had the first hit rock & roll record when a song they had recorded in 1953, "Gee," had a surprising resurgence a year later and crossed over from the R&B charts onto the Top 20 pop list.
