Since the early 1960s, Artist has been one of the most celebrated trombonists in jazz. His clear, resounding tone and nimble improvisation skills have made him as legendary as the great J.J. Johnson. His time spent in the bands of Benny Golson and Art Blakey's Jazz Messengers, as well as his numerous stints as a sideman, have cemented his place in the jazz pantheon as one of the giants of the hard bop genre.
