The brash, velocity-seeking ethos of hardcore punk might be the engine that drives groups like Dance Gavin Dance but, given that past DGD releases have drawn from an eclectic grab-bag of influences ranging from progressive rock to jazz, it's no surprise the band's fourth album, HAPPINESS, finds their sound evolving in leaps and bounds. While DGD's virtuosity and love of unconventional song structures remain intact, the band is clearly pushing the envelope here on ear-grabbing hooks, with new vocalist Kurt Travis's radio-friendly tone coming into the spotlight on the explosive "Tree Village" and the barnstorming rock epic "Nasa."
