Though the rap artist RedCloud comes with a variety of labels attached--Hispanic, Native American, West Coast gangsta--his third full-length release manages to transcend all of them in an astonishingly original mix of old-school beats and his own rhyming and production skills. Of course it doesn't hurt that he's helped out by artists of the caliber of Jamaican dancehall star Eek-A-Mouse and Tha Dogg Pound's Kurupt, but his unique retelling of Native American history on the masterfully assembled "Battle of Little Big Horn," blended with the gangsta-style California dreaming of "405" and the cinematic "Boulevard Knights," sets RedCloud apart from his West Coast peers.

Writers Block is a duet project between Zen and Dannu, both members of the Los Angeles underground hip-hop set the Visionaries. The first thing one notices with early songs like "Sunset Limited" is that the beats and settings on this album are both immediately gripping and composed of unexpected elements. Their debut album, En Route, is sprawling and a little overlong, but over the course of these 20 tracks, the pair mostly keep themselves on the right side. (Unsurprisingly, the track "No More No Less" brags about the care the pair takes in fashioning its beats.) Over this, both rappers tend to work solo, taking all or at least most of the verses in any particular song, possibly joining together on the choruses; naturally, this is all in addition to the usual parade of guest stars.
