German power metal act Artist return with a fifth album that further explores the ideas already covered on the first four, few of which were particularly unique to begin with. As a result, it's unsurprising that Artist announced they were splitting up on the eve of this album's delayed U.S. release. ~ Stewart Mason
Artist: Thorsten 'Buddy' Kohlrausch (vocals); Torsten Sauerbrey (drums); Michael Lowin (background vocals).
Additional personnel: Dr. Also, drummer/guitarist and primary songwriter Torsten Sauerbrey has a decent ear for dynamics and pacing, best heard on centerpiece track "The Road to Eternity." Overall, however, there is little on Artist that couldn't have fit just as easily on any of the band's earlier records, and there's a sense that the group is simply spinning its wheels. In particular, singer Thorsten Kohlrausch's voice is simply so odd, pitched somewhere between the falsetto shrieks of the '80s metal heyday and the glottal grunts of today but not quite of either style, that it becomes strangely fascinating to listen to. Artist do have some appealing aspects.
