On TONIGHT"S AFRICAN JAZZ BAND, Diabate is backed by Source, an improvisational ensemble organized by Canadian flautist Sylvain Leroux. Malian guitarist and vocalist Abdoulaye Diabate has been blurring the boundaries between traditional African music and Western-influenced pop since he joined the Orchestre Regionale de Segou in the mid-'70s. The group performs a pleasing approximation of Malian Afro-pop, but the real attraction here is Diabate's effortlessly fluid guitar work, which dominates throughout.
An improvisational West African Dance band with a jazz flair in its use of bass, drums, keyboard and wind.
