A musical associate of Charles Mingus, as well as Billie Holiday's last accompanist, pianist Mal Waldron dramatically mixed intuitive blues phrasing with a rich sense of tradition. From his post-bop beginnings, he eventually progressed to an innovative, atmospheric style.
