 David Essex Biography
British heartthrob David Essex was known first as an actor, starring memorably in an early London production of GODSPELL and the gritty 1973 film THAT'LL BE THE DAY. It was for this movie that Essex wrote and recorded his biggest hit, "Rock On," a desultory but smoldering glam-blues number celebrating the rock-&-roll mythos. The song never made it onto the soundtrack, but would later be covered by soap star Michael Damian and the band Def Leppard. Essex had several more hits in the U.K., including the catchy, Tin Pan Alley-esque "Hold Me Close," and continued to release albums and soundtrack songs through the 1990s. In the U.S., he has remained a pleasant mid-'70s memory, and the man responsible for one of the trippiest Top Ten hits ever.
