| Julian Fane Our New Quarters CD (2007)
$12.95 This departure might alienate those who just want to hear æ-Ziq and his army of glitchy minions ad infinitum -- but those willing to look past such trivial things will find Our New Quarters a refreshing and exciting listen. He also brings in influences from the new wave and post-punk eras to give the songs more of an upbeat and vivid feel than the aforementioned comparisons. To get one thing out in the open immediately: Julian Fane sounds like Thom Yorke. It's also a bold departure for Planet Mu, which for the past several years has been branching out into styles years away from its frantic signature IDM sound and into different territories. These are simple, melodic pop songs that are haunting, and while there's nothing groundbreaking, Fane does the job very well. ~ Rob Theakston
Audio Mixer: Julian Fane And while many of the tracks also bear a slight resemblance to OK Computer-era Radiohead or Sigur Rós, Fane doesn't just go for the easy sound-alike. Not in a bad, budget-compilation imitative way, but his breathy falsetto and semi-indecipherable delivery immediately open up inevitable comparisons.

Julian Fane CD discography
$14.29 There's something for every electronic music head and the style jumping brings reminders of when collections didn't always come with concepts. The transition from Jospeh Nothing's serene "Piazza of Tomorrow" to Shitmat's Ramones-sampling drill n' bass workout, "Shopliftin' Gabba," illustrates what's great about the collection. Spanning the underground electronic music spectrum from glitch to ambient, Children of Mu rounds up tracks -- mostly unreleased -- by the best the Planet Mu label has to offer, minus anything by label head Mike Paradinas.

$7.85 Opening with the grooved-out soul-hop-house track "The Unbearable Phatness of Being," by Dykehouse is certainly auspicious. Planet Mu digs into its catalog with this comp and underscores some stunning moments from its past.
