Free Design Biography
This jazzy, folk-pop band from the late 1960s was known for its breezy songs about kites ("Kites Are Fun"), umbrellas ("Umbrellas"), and other carefree concerns. Despite its proto-twee demeanor, the group had serious pop smarts and favored ornate lite-psych arrangements similar to other baroque pop acts of the time. Though the band's impact was limited during its actual existence, it would prove a huge influence on a diverse set of artists that includes Stereolab, Belle & Sebastian, the Super Furry Animals, and the Pizzicato Five, among many others. The 2005 album THE NOW SOUND REDESIGNED found modern-day followers of the band remixing and reworking classic Free Design tracks.
