 Kinky Friedman Biography
Raised Jewish in Texas, Friedman spent his career celebrating, lampooning, and generally obsessing over his unlikely status as a cowboy hat-wearin', country singin' jew. He started in the surf rock band King Arthur and the Carrots, but by the '70s had embraced country music and found its outlaw element--the Glaser Brothers, Willie Nelson, Waylon Jennings--embracing him back. Hitching his gonzo songwriting to a raucous backing band, the Texas Jewboys, Friedman made several critically acclaimed progressive country albums and even joined Bob Dylan in the Rolling Thunder Revue. Ethnic comedy aside, Friedman could also write extraordinarily effecting ballads such as "Sold American" about an Opry has-been and "Ride 'Em Jewboy," a heartbreaking cowboy song about the Holocaust. Friedman eventually switched careers and found success as a crime novelist, and even made a thwarted third party run at the Texas governship in 2006.
