HUNTING HIGH AND LOW shows that there's much more to A-Ha than their memory in common pop history suggests.

Additional personnel: Claire Jarvis (oboe). However, HUNTING HIGH AND LOW actually contains a second US Top 40 hit, "The Sun Always Shines On TV." In addition, even after those songs ceased to receive airplay, A-Ha continued a long and successful career in Europe and elsewhere.
Besides the two singles, the album contains the haunting title track, "Living A Boy's Adventure Tale," which comes across as a keyboard-heavy Scandinavian version of early U2, and the quirky "The Blue Sky," an arresting showcase for Harket's piercing falsetto. The first album by the Norwegian trio of singer Morten Harket, songwriter Pal Waaktaar and keyboardist Mags will forever be known as the album that contains the intoxicating "Take On Me," one of the most famous and enduring "one-hit wonders" of the '80s.

This is a nicely crafted collection of songs, performed and sung beautifully, with lots of echoes and suggestions tucked into the music. Although they had fallen out of favor in the U.S., the band remained extremely successful in Europe and Japan. A small surprise, too quickly destined for the cut-out bins considering the way their career finally went after Hunting High And Low. The album is far more upbeat than the darkly beautiful Stay On These Roads (released in 1988) and features the hits 'Early Morning', 'I Call Your Name' and their stunning remake of the Everly Brothers' 'Crying In The Rain'. While not an album one can discuss at length, it's an album that's a pleasure to listen to and one that deserves a better reception than the one, unfortunately, that it seems to have gotten. East Of The Sun, West Of The Moon was the Norwegian trio's fourth album and was originally released in 1990. ~ Steven McDonald
