Clay penned the better part of Cherry Bank Hotel during 2003/04, in an Austin, Texas apartment passed on to him by Corb Lund. He was also interviewed on Austin Music Network Television. Disillusionment and loneliness thread Cherry Bank Hotel together, but Victoria, BC native Clay George’s easy baritone uplifts, harkening back to the troubadours of country music that gave the genre form and soul. Featuring the warm production and guitar tones of Victoria treasure Tolan McNeil, and featuring guests Carolyn Mark, Daniel Lapp, Doc Jenkins and others, Cherry Bank Hotel marks Clay George’s full arrival on the Canadian roots scene. While in Austin he performed regularly at venues such as The Cactus Café, the holy grail of gigs for Austin songwriters where such notables as Lyle Lovett, Townes Van Zant, and Lucinda Williams all got their start. Fitting then that he will set the stage for Steve Earle at Regina’s Folk Festival before heading out on tour with his band in September. Many of his stories come from direct experience: the everyman’s story of the drift westward, a thought to study religion (his own road Damascus a Victoria side street and an encounter with country legend, Jay Garnett), and his temporary move to Texas are all put to song. Clay’s keen eyes and ears pick up the richness of everyday experience, and his warm voice transforms those observations into distinct and worthy ruminations.
