Thanks to R.E.M., there was no shortage of Southern guitar pop bands in the early '80s, but Guadalcanal Diary was different from the rest. While 2X4 was easily the group's apex, the two albums on this disc are hardly baby steps, and some devout fans even view them as their favorites. The first album, produced with a small budget by Don Dixon, helped establish them as a cult group, while the second -- produced mostly by Rodney Mills, with a couple songs produced by Steve Nye -- laid the foundation for 2X4, their third and best album. ~ Andy Kellman
Full title - Walking In The Shadow Of The Big Man/Jamboree. While their songs and melodies were as melodic and approachable as R.E.M., the Byrds, or any of their imitators, singer/guitarist Murray Attaway's lyrics were bizarre treatises of his favorite obsessions - American history and mythology, religion, and the supernatural. Collectables combined Guadalcanal Diary's first two albums -- 1984's Walking in the Shadow of the Big Man and 1986's Jamboree, both originally released on Elektra -- for this 2003 release. This two on one CD features their first and second albums from 1984& 1986. Though the group strikes a strong resemblance to peers R.E.M., Murray Attaway's unique songwriting is enough to make the musical similarities seem less problematic.

Fortunately, the songs here are excellent, exhibiting much variety within this style. The long jangle pop shadow of R.E.M. is extremely strong on this release, with seven of the ten tracks showing either full or partial influence of that group. Like R.E.M., the B-52's, and Pylon, this fine band hailed from the unlikely independent-rock hotbed of Athens, GA.
