 Guru Biography
Even if Guru never did anything else after teaming with DJ Premier in the late '80s to form the progressive East Coast hip-hop duo Gang Starr, his name would go down in rap history as a creative pioneer. So it's all the more impressive that in the early '90s he blazed a whole new trail by popularizing the use of samples from classic (in this case Blue Note) jazz records to expand the sonic palette of hip-hop tracks. His 1993 album JAZZMATAZZ was a hugely influential blending of bop and rap, and over the next few years, in addition to returning to active Gang Starr duty, Guru recorded three further installments of the landmark series.
