On To the Sky, trombonist and composer/arranger Ryan Haines pays tribute to the United States Air Force, utilizing a big band to perform eight of his originals and two standards. Both of the latter ("Do You Know What It Means to Miss New Orleans" and "I'll Wait for You") have vocals. The music is conventional, swings hard, and Haines, who has solos on five of the ten selections, proves to be an outstanding player. This spirited date is easily recommended to fans of modern swinging big bands. Unfortunately the personnel for the orchestra (other than the key soloists) is not listed.

The key soloists are tenor saxophonist Tedd Baker, Lucas Munce on alto and soprano, and especially Haines, who has spots on six of the numbers, but much of the music is ensemble-oriented. His nine originals form a type of suite, with each part dedicated to some aspect of his life, including past bands, San Diego, and family members. Although there are some fine solos on this big-band set, the main point to this project is the writing of trombonist Ryan Haines. While the individual melodies are not all that memorable by themselves (other than the whimsical "Riding the Bavarian Sidecar"), on a whole the music is swinging, colorful, and just unpredictable enough to hold one's interest throughout.
