Something’s Gotta Change tells the story of watching someone else struggle and feeling powerless to help them. Chris Smither’s Bittersweet is a jaunty commentary weaving a wistful melody through the acoustic guitar as she laments, “Nothing seems to hang on like it used to do.” Kalamazoo brings to mind Shawn Colvin as it tips the hat to the hometown where Halpin grew up. Penned in 2005, the songs are written in the vintage spirit of the CD’s like Garden State through a modern songwriter’s lens. House of Mirrors is Robin Halpin’s second CD. Girl on the Wall is an homage to a basement wall mural that saw her through college years and war protests as “it stood for peace and love when life was unfair, we heard freedom call from the Girl on the Wall.” History portrays an unraveling relationship until there’s nothing left but the past. While illuminating reflections of people closest to her, Halpin sheds light on universal truths that touches lives far beyond her inner circle.
