| | Bob Hillman Playing God CD (1999)
$15.19 One of Hillman's methods for pretension deflation is that trickiest of devices, the untrustworthy narrator a la Randy Newman. Like Elliott Smith or Elvis Costello, Bob Hillman is a skilled singer-songwriter whose music bears touches of Beatles-descended power-pop, and he's smart enough to play the wiseguy only when its called for. The world--especially the pop world--needs wiseguys to keep a proper perspective on things and deflate rampant pretensions. This tactic enables us to see the insecurity behind the megalomania of the tall tall-tale-teller in "Little Things" as well as the cracks in the facade of the ambitious huckster in "When I Wrote the Book."
Hillman uses more conventional means and a light touch to skewer the myth of the starving artist on "Everyone's an Actor in New York." Like Newman, or perhaps Loudon Wainwright III, Hillman is blessed with a voice that lends a tinge of irony to any subject, so even the most ostensibly face-value songs here are deepened by a perceived emotional sleight-of-hand.
