 William Hooker Biography
An intrepid explorer at the margins of free jazz and more experimental forms, William Hooker has plied his trade as a drummer in a diverse range of contexts since his arrival on the New York's loft jazz scene in the mid-`70s. Initially a backing player for touring artists like the Isley Brothers and Dionne Warwick, Hooker began to expand his musical horizons during the radical social upheaval of the late `60s. He landed in New York City shortly thereafter, where his potent percussive assaults made him a respected figure in avant-jazz circles. Despite his workmanlike presence in that scene throughout the `70s and `80s, Hooker's recorded output only began to appear by the early `90s. SUBCONSCIOUS (1994), an album for Thurston Moore's underground rock label, Ecstatic Peace, brought newfound interest from fans of noise rock and experimental music. Into his fourth decade of performing, Hooker continues to cross genres through collaborations with likeminded innovators such as DJ Olive and Christian Marclay.
