Whiskey-soaked beyond his years, he sounds like a wizened old pensioner, an effect that helps convey the songs on his 2008 release, which are all based on letters written home by a soldier--his grandfather--during World War II. Matt Arbogast is "The Gunshy" and his singing voice is not easily forgotten. Harrowing first-person accounts of battle are set to driving acoustic tracks, which, due to the intensity of playing, subject matter, and Arbogast's vocals, are more punk than folk.
