Even more roots-conscious than its predecessors, this album brings together the pulsing polyrhythms of Central and Western Africa with traditional Scottish folk in a way that gives equal priority to both styles yet makes for a wholly credible fusion.
True to their name, Baka Beyond bases many of their experiments on the music of the Baka people of Cameroon. Whistles and bagpipes weave Highland melodies through complex drumming on these moving acoustic recordings. As they do on albums like SPIRIT OF THE FOREST and THE MEETING POOL, Baka Beyond plays with African and Celtic musical forms on EAST TO WEST. A group of Baka children sing on "Awaya Baka," for example, while "Wandering Spirit" marries a Scottish jig to a Baka dance.
