Lady Saw Biography
Since its inception, Jamaica's dancehall culture has been known for its extreme displays of masculinity, male sexual bravado, and gangsta braggadocio, all of which made female DJ Artist's rise to superstardom all the more significant. Debuting in the mid 1990s, Saw easily matched her male counterparts in terms of gusto and skill, and while her lyrical content was by no means mild (in fact it was "slack" enough to get her censored in Jamaica), it was from a distinctly female perspective. "The First Lady of Dancehall" opened the door for many other female dancehall singers, and even took home a Grammy in 2003 for her guest appearance on No Doubt's "Underneath it All."
