Liz CD discography
$39.39 Keke isn't much on cursing, either, which will come as a relief to those worn down by the usual torrent of gangsta-related profanity on many hip-hop releases--he relies instead on his Texas-honed freestyle smarts, which he's corrals here into a hot and innovative set.
Lil' Keke may not have moved as many units as Ludacris or Mystikal, but make no mistake: He's one of the most talented rappers in the late-'90s/early-2000s Dirty South scene, arguably the best MC in Houston, TX. "Pyrex Shakin'" displays more than a trace of Southwestern musical influences underneath its gangsta sheen. The title track being a case in point; it's about Keke's status in his neighborhood where he was a superstar long before he had a record deal, solely on the popularity of the tapes he and his Screwed Up Click sold out of their homes.
Elsewhere "Do You Love It," with its spacey mix of synths and acoustic guitar is about the price of fame, while "Cowgirl" explores more familiar territory ("she's like a pony when she's rockin' my world"). This will change with the release of PLATINUM IN DA GHETTO. With the help of such Texas stalwarts as Eightball, MJG and the lesser-known Z-Ro and C-Note, Lil' Keke has crafted an album that's part gangsta, part freestyle rapping, and wholly original. This version of PLATINUM IN DA GHETTO is mixed in the Southern Rap Screwed style.
The Houston gangsta rapper's 2001 album features his hit "Platinum in the Ghetto," as well as a bonus track.
Though Li' Keke has been a force on the Southwest rap scene since the mid-'90s with five albums to his credit (THE COMMISSION, his second release, was basically his debut DON'T MESS WIT TEXAS renamed and reissued with extra tracks), he's hardly a household name in the rest of the country. And Keke indeed goes out of his way to let you know this on Platinum in the Ghetto -- the title itself commenting on his cult status.
