 Nick Lowe Biography
Nick Lowe holds a unique position in British pop history, being a key architect in punk and pub-rock as well as power pop. In fact, he started out in the 1960s as a member of little-known psych-pop band Kippington Lodge. Eventually that group evolved into Brinsley Schwarz (named for their guitarist), who were perhaps the most important band in pub-rock, an early-'70s U.K. style of American-influenced roots-rock. When those influenced by pub-rock kick-started the punk movement in the late '70s, Lowe was in the vanguard once more, this time as a solo artist turning out snappy New Wave pop. In 1980 he teamed with Dave Edmunds for one album as Rockpile, but soon resumed his solo work, which by the '90s had turned rootsier and more introspective, but no less rewarding.
