On LUSCINIA'S LULLABY, MacDonald's superb singing and eclectic approach are refined to perfection. The results are hauntingly atmospheric, with MacDonald's ethereal, often wordless vocalizing fleshed out by percussion, guitars, various stringed instruments, and crisp, detail-oriented production.
"Beauty Found Me," a plaintive lullaby, is one of album's highlights, as is the somewhat unsettling title track (with its chorus of eerie whispers). LUSCINIA'S LULLABY is most impressive in how it manages to be gentle and alluring, while remaining steadfastly experimental. The spare, floating "Cadal Chan Fhaigh Mi" should appeal to fans of Enya and Clannad, while "Ysaiophony" takes the Celtic tradition through a drum sequencer. Though there is a strong Celtic component to Laurel MacDonald's music, there are also doses of world beat, Western pop, contemporary electronica, and Gregorian chant.
