On 2008's LIGHT IT UP, Rev Theory, previously known as Revolution Theory, offers up a hard-charging set of no-frills heavy rock. With a guitarist named Rikki Lixx and songs titles such as "Hell Yeah," the New York City-based band certainly isn't a cadre of Rhodes scholars, but its blunt-force delivery will easily appeal to fans of Hinder and Nickelback.

The four-piece leaves nothing to chance on its debut full-length release. New York's Revelation Theory cultivates a blockbuster sound, full of pounding drums and shredding guitars, that harks back to early 1990s Soundgarden. The sledgehammer-like album-opener, "Slowburn," is a full-on aural assault, with Rich Luzzi's passionate vocals taking pride of place in the churning mix, while even the relatively sedate "Selfish and Cold" captures a mood of brooding menace in its measured, calculating tempos and searing chorus.
