 Minor Threat Biography
It's almost impossible to overstate the impact Minor Threat has had on indie, punk, and alternative music since their brief existence in the early 1980s. As one of the first hardcore punk bands, the Washington, DC-based outfit created the template for a louder, faster, and more concise version of the nascent rock style that would be referenced in some form by seemingly every punk band to follow in their wake. The band also, though perhaps inadvertently, gave rise to the straight-edge movement, an ideological strain of hardcore that promotes complete abstinence from drugs and alcohol. Formed by Dischord Records founders Jeff Nelson and Ian MacKaye (who later started, among other bands, Fugazi), Minor Threat are, simply put, one of the most important and influential punk bands ever.
