Airto Moreira Biography
The Brazilian percussionist Artist moved to Rio de Janeiro when he was 16 years old. In the '60s, he played in a quartet with pianist/flautist Hermeto Pascoal, after which he moved to New York in 1970 to work with Miles Davis on the innovative BITCHES BREW. He then played percussion on Weather Report's debut in 1971 and also joined Chick Corea's original Return To Forever. He subsequently worked with tenor saxophonists Stan Getz and Gato Barbieri, and drummer Mickey Hart with whom he recorded the percussion soundtrack for Francis Ford Coppola's movie APOCALYPSE NOW. In the mid-'80s,he played with the Al Di Meola Project, before co-founding Planet Drum whose 1991 debut album won a Grammy Award. His successful solo album, THE OTHER SIDE OF THIS, for Rykodisc Records, appeared in 1992.
