If you want to think of him as the Kurdish Richard Thompson, that's probably not a bad analogy, although his music won't be quite as accessible to Western ears. Although he draws strongly from the Kurdish tradition, he's a contemporary writer and performer. Widely acknowledged as one of the leading Kurdish bards, in addition to being a player of the traditional stringed instrument, the tanbur (and several other instruments), Temo lives in France, where this album was made. But, like Thompson (at least in his classic period), he pulls his inspiration, images, and sense of melody from his own tradition, and brings it back as something new, as on "Derew," which sits very easily on the same disc as the traditional "Ji Dil." He doesn't release albums often, so each one is quite special -- and this one is no exception.
