Recorded just three months before the death of the inimitable trombonist, this disc is a fitting goodbye for the trombonist. For the evening set, modern-jazz baritone saxophonist Gerry Mulligan--who was performing with his own group at the festival--sits in with the ensemble. A fascinating double set of music is presented on A HUNDRED YEARS FROM TODAY; both the afternoon and evening performances by Teagarden's band are documented here. This 1963 Monterey Jazz Festival concert features two of the most respected men in Dixieland jazz, namely trombone great Jack Teagarden and clarinet luminary Pee Wee Russell. Brother Charlie Teagarden (trumpet), mother Helen Teagarden (piano), and sister Norma Teagarden (also on piano) all contribute to this endearing release. Mulligan plays in a more traditional style quite beautifully, showing the range of his abilities.
