The music on SWEAT IT OUT encourages a kind of squeaky-clean rebellion that's miles away from the destructive impulses of punk, rap, metal, etc. Nashville's stylish Pink Spiders remember the days when rock was all about thwarted desire, forbidden dances, and working up a righteous sweat. It's the kind of pure pop that seems as if it should be all over the top 40, but rarely finds a home anymore. When we last checked in with Nashville's the Pink Spiders, they'd been signed to Geffen Records, were handed a next-big-thing advance, and went into the studio with producer Ric Ocasek, who polished off a bit of the grit from their cheerfully sleazy power pop meets pop-punk indie debut while pumping up the hooks. More power pop than punk, songs like "Seventeen Candles" and "Here Comes Trouble" are clear descendants of Cheap Trick's wry, square-peg '70s rock.
