Pop Group Biography
Pop Group albums Formed in 1978 in Bristol, England, the Artist played a fierce brand of politically motivated post-punk, characterized by noisy, slicing guitars, primitive, often funky rhythms, and agit-prop lyrics. Coalescing around abrasive vocalist Mark Stewart, the ironically named band issued their debut single, "She Is Beyond Good and Evil," in 1979, and their full-length debut, Y, later that same year. The band then signed to indie stalwart label Rough Trade, which released their best-known single, "We Are All Prostitutes," as well as their 1980 sophomore effort, HOW MUCH LONGER DO WE TOLERATE MASS MURDER? which featured American rap pioneers The Last Poets on one track. A split single with the Slits followed, shortly before the band split up. Compilations of album tracks, live cuts, demos, and outtakes have appeared on 1980's WE ARE TIME and 1998's WE ARE ALL PROSTITUTES.
