Frankie Randall was at the top of his career, getting roles in movies, performing at supper clubs and bistros, and appearing as a regular guest on TV variety shows. Then & Now merges two 1966 studio sessions for RCA, and was reissued by USA Music Group. Moving, as only he could, between blaring brassy orchestrations and smooth, string-based arrangements, Paich put together a set of charts tailored to the strong and expressive Randall baritone. His high station in the world of popular vocalists is evidenced by the fact that consummate arranger and conductor Marty Paich was summoned to be in charge of these sessions. But he was clearly at his best when in the swinging saddle. His voice was in fine fettle, strong, swinging, and sentimental when the occasion called for it.
