W.A.S.P.'s second full-length release, THE LAST COMMAND, showed that leader/principal songwriter Blackie Lawless was attempting to write better songs. Though THE LAST COMMAND is not as challenging as such future albums as THE HEADLESS CHILDREN and THE CRIMSON IDOL would be, 1985's THE LAST COMMAND contained several tracks that would become concert staples for years to come.
Two of the album's best-known tracks remain "Wild Child" and "Blind in Texas," along with the not-so-subtly-titled "Ballcrusher" and "Jack Action." The late-'90s CD reissue this hit album includes several bonus cuts and live takes of "Animal (F**k Like a Beast)" and others.
2003 remastered reissue of 1985 album, packaged in a digipak, includes seven bonus tracks, 'Savage' (Studio B), 'Mississippi Queen' (Studio), 'Animal Fuck Like A Beast' (Live), 'Helion' (Live), 'Love Machine' (Live), 'On Your Knees' (Live), & 'I Want To Be Somebody' (Live). While some of the tracks still contain the gross-out element that made the band's debut a success, Lawless wanted the public to start taking his band more seriously, and not focus so much on W.A.S.P.'s stage antics. A different A.N.I.M.A.L. from the Argentinian thrashers of the same name, the band that released 900 LB. ~ Brian O'Neill
Wasp & early Black Sabbath style. Some cuts delve into post-Alice In Chains minor-chord melodrama, such as "Pissed Off" and "Talk Too Much," but the overall vibe is unapologetically metal to the nines. The disc is a full-on hard rock record that shows no betrayal of the guitar duo's roots (the title track sounds like a B-side from the Inside the Electric Circus sessions), with strong vocals from Rich Lewis (formerly of Big American Dogs) that sound like Ron Keel in his prime. Steam as their debut is best known as a vehicle for former W.A.S.P. guitarists Chris Holmes and Randy Piper.
