| | Rodan Rusty CD (1994)
$11.55 The lone EP by this seminal Kentucky post-hardcore outfit (whose members would go on to equally beloved indie outfits such as June of 44), reissued with renewed clarity by original label Quarterstick, is a behemoth of unpredictable quiet-loud arrangements and whisper-to-a-wail vocals. Rodan: Jeffrey Mueller (guitar, vocals), Jason B. Whatever scene or geographical associations Rodan dealt with by being from Louisville, KY, in the early '90s, setting those aside and looking at the music straight up reveals one key fact: this was an amazing band, one with clear roots but also one with a sense of its own strong fusion. Additional personnel: Christian Frederickson (viola), Eve Miller, Nat Barrett (cello), Michael Kurth (bass). The six-song set begins inauspiciously enough with the seven-minute instrumental "Bible Silver Corner," but quickly fires up to its metallically meandering mid-section, highlighted by the 12-minute epic "The Everyday World Of Bodies." Years later, RUSTY sounds anything but what its title suggests; it's a cornerstone of the mid-'90s uprising of artsy ex-punks making complicated math rock. Recording information: Chicago, IL (10/20/1993-10/22/1993); Our House, Louisville, KY (10/20/1993-10/22/1993). Personnel: Jason Noble (vocals, guitar, piano); Kevin Coultas (vocals, guitar, drums); Christian Frederickson (viola); Eve Miller (cello); Tara Jane O'Neil (electric bass). Noble (guitar, vocals, piano), Tara Jane O'Neil (bass, vocals), Kevin Coultas (drums, guitar, vocals).
