 Jimmy Scott Biography
Though Jimmy Scott would eventually become known for his jazz ballad singing, the Cleveland-born vocalist who started out with the bands of Lionel Hampton and Paul Gayten began his solo career in the early 1950s recording commercial R&B material. Scott suffered from a rare condition known as Kallman's syndrome, which, among other things, kept his voice in a high, feminine range that was unusually distinctive. He recorded some classic material for Savoy before moving on to various other labels, but in the '90s he had a mainstream comeback with a series of dreamy major-label recordings featuring a mix of standards and more eclectic material.
