Rising from humble beginnings to become a staple of Mexican culture, Artist began as a lyricist in the 1970s, but by the '90s, the versatile folk singer was a superstar in his own right. Known for his ability to flourish in all sorts of regional Mexican traditions, and an anachronistic ear for melody, José Manuel Figueroa decided to call himself Artist - paying tribute to San Sebastian, where he used to work. A showman in every sense, Sebastian even showed up onscreen as star of the telenovela TU Y YO. Although Sebastian was diagnosed with cancer in 1999, he survived it by staying busy and the next year he won a Grammy for SECRETO DE AMOR. Prolific in both recording and touring, Sebastian is one of the true masters at blending sounds north and south of the border.
