| | Slaughterhouse Slaughterhouse CD (2009)
$14.29 Something of a halfway house for label-troubled rappers, Artist brings together four rappers who have been often caught up in red tape. Plus, despite the many chefs, the four egos play off each other almost flawlessly. The slick 2009 debut is ample reminder of the deep talents of Joe Budden, Royce Da 5'9", Crooked I, and Joell Ortiz (particularly the uniquely drawling Budden). The lines are occasionally silly, but more often they are clever and ear-popping, and they're almost always provocative.

 Slaughterhouse Biography
When Crooked I, Joell Ortiz, and Royce Da 5'9" joined Joe Budden on his 2008 mixtape Halfway House, the chemistry on their collaborative track meant "Artist" the song would quickly become Artist the hip-hop supergroup. Other tracks recorded at their initial meeting bypassed the usual music distribution channels and were leaked to the net. They recorded their debut album in a mere six days, signed to E1, and released their self-titled debut in 2009. Due to sample clearance issues, the final product did not include the promised single "Woodstock," but in keeping with the group's alternative marketing plan, it was released via Budden's Twitter account. ~ David Jeffries
