| | No Sighing Strains Of Violins CD (1998)
$9.95 This is among the worst records from Steve Ignorant of Crass and any of his various projects. After the opening tune "Won't Get Me," which is good, the listener begins to wonder why the distorted guitar has been relegated to the distant background and a trebly guitar sound has replaced it. The Stratford Mercenaries are obviously trying to be experimental by adding horns and the occasional electronic bit to their straightforward live punk sound. But this record barely sounds at all like the band does live, where they play furiously and draw rabid audiences. Though, the main problem with this record, which will please very few fans, is the awful production which has replaced almost everything punk rock about the band with pathetic, mildly artsy attempts at being eccentric. A real failure from a talented band. Ignorant's voice is also incredibly off-key at times.

| Stratford Mercenaries Sense Of Solitude CD (2000)
$11.79 "Dispossessed" is a rotten karaoke-sounding song with some wack keyboards, while "Series IIa" is a guitar wankfest that's not unlike Chinese water torture. The Stratford Mercenaries prove themselves to be inadequate at playing anything but punk rock, though there's very little of that on this record. Here, it's not just the fault of bad production ideas and failed attempts at experimentation as it was on No Sighing Strains of Violins, but also some worthless songs. Almost as bad as No Sighing Strains of Violins, Sense of Solitude is another careless disappointment from the Stratford Mercenaries, who seem to be incapable of good taste when it comes to recording. But the Stratford Mercenaries fail in a big way when it comes to branching out at all. Singer/songwriter Steve Ignorant's former band Crass was more experimental than most British punk bands and was usually successful with that sort of thing.
