 The Biography
British songwriter Matt Johnson, and various commutative cohorts, have functioned as The The since 1979. Initially signed to 4AD, the synth-based "band" has changed labels multiple times and, though not prolific, have released several critically acclaimed albums, employing the talents of such well-known guest stars as Sinead O'Connor, Johnny Marr, and Jools Holland. The The's most celebrated effort so far has been 1985's bass-heavy, hook-laden SOUL MINING.
