| | Bright Orange Years CD (1985) Bonus Tracks; Remastered
$10.69 A bit more caffeinated than the regular Burma sound, the group's debut is all jittery riffs, slacker-poet vocals, and rudimentary drum fills. But much like New Order's initial stab at removing themselves from Joy Division's shadow, BRIGHT ORANGE YEARS has a foot planted in both the future and the past. When Mission Of Burma drummer Peter Prescott formed the Volcano Suns, the intent was to differentiate the new band somewhat from the precision post-punk of his former outfit. Somewhat akin to what would follow with the remainder of the Volcano Suns' records, their 1985 debut is a messy sprawl of basement jams. And despite Volcano's East Coast origins, their debut LP feels like a logical middle point between Wire's agit-New Wave and the West Coast hardcore-cum-pop punk of Bad Religion.
Between Ian MacKaye and "Sherman the Tank," the thank-you list on the back of The Bright Orange Years tellingly acknowledges beer.

 Volcano Suns Biography
Volcano Suns CD discography The Artist were formed in Boston by former Mission of Burma drummer Peter Prescott in 1983. The original lineup included two members who left to start Big Dipper, with new personnel coming on board for the first Artist album, 1985's THE BRIGHT ORANGE YEARS. Over the course of six albums in the '80s and early '90s, the Suns continued to develop their sound, which brought arty sensibilities to loud, off-kilter post punk, interspersed with free-form experimentation. After their final album in 1991, the band splintered off into various outfits, including Shellac, Kustomized, and the Peer Group.
