W.A.S.P. Biography
The theatrical shock-rock troupe, Artist was famed for their outrageous live performances which included throwing raw meat into the audience, whipping a naked woman tied to a `torture rack', and flaming codpieces. Their debut single, `Animal (F**k Like A Beast)', was licensed to independent labels when Capitol refused to release it. The growing notoriety made them a constant target for the American organisation PMRC, and frontman, Blackie Lawless became a tireless, if unlikely, campaigner for free speech. After an underwhelming debut album, the more refined The Last Command produced the excellent singles `Wild Child' and `Blind In Texas'. Although their commercial performance fell away in the 90s, the band remained a huge live draw and in late-2007 embarked on a tour to celebrating the 15th anniversary of The Crimson Idol.
