Unrefined was produced and recorded over a 12 month period at Lola Records studios in Minneapolis MN. In the process of staring at the wall, rehearsing and touring, the collection of songs on 'Unrefined' came to the fore. Like its predecessor 'Sensational bad News', 'Unrefined' is constructed on solid songwriting and inspired, improvised musicianship throughout. The band is presently in pre-production on its third studio release (due Christmas '08) and will be on tour for much of the year in support of Unrefined. The new album takes the listener on a languid, yet harrowing journey through lyrical plot twists and a surprising array of musical styles. When the personnel dust settled in 2005, the band created its own 'Wall of Sound', listing the names and chord progressions for more than 60 songs for the band to learn. Upon the heels of the 2004 full-length debut, Sensational Bad News, the band was retooled to include its current lineup. The songs on Unrefined range from the pleasantly disturbing (Snapshots of A Human Mind, Alone, Apocalyptic Inauguration, Instrumission), to political commentary (the background vocals in World of Everything Gone Wrong are 'whoa GW'!), to straight up folk (Biorhythms, And), and of course rock and roll. Bull, who continues to handle most of the songwriting, lead vocal and rhythm guitar duties; Gary Olson ('G') on drums and percussion; Craig Butler (Spacebike, Vesicular Basalt) on bass; and multi-instrumentalist AJ Piga handling lead guitar, pedal steel guitar and mandolin. Begun as a solo singer-songwriter in 1996, Waxing Phil is now a collective of musicians which includes the original 'Waxing Phil', Eric D. (except Radiohead, perhaps). The band's sound can still be compared to Cat Stevens and Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers, but not since the days of Steely Dan and Supertramp, have the word nerds and prog/jazz/rock geeks had anything this ripe for dissection.
