 Papa Wemba Biography
The career of beloved Congolese singer Papa Wemba got off the ground in 1969 when he formed the singing group Zaiko Langa Langa, an early example of world fusion, combining traditional African soukous rhythms with rock instrumentation and soulful R&B overtones. Other musical projects followed, all marked by Wemba's distinctive, keening vocals, which were somewhat at odds with the sweeter tones employed by his African peers. His international exposure increased dramatically upon the release of his 1992 album, LE VOYAGEUR, on Peter Gabriel's Real World label, after which he became a fixture on the world music scene. In addition to releasing solo albums, he also leads a more traditional soukous orchestra as a separate enterprise.
