 Cassandra Wilson Biography
Like many jazz musicians before her, Mississippi-born vocalist/songwriter Cassandra Wilson moved to New York City in pursuit of both the muse and a musical career. In the mid-1980s she fell in with Steve Coleman's progressive-jazz collective M-Base, singing on records by Coleman and others, who in turn worked with her on her early solo recordings. During this time, she incorporated jazz, R&B, and world music influences into her sound, performing both standards and her own material. Though this endeared her to the jazz world, Wilson broke through to the mainstream in the mid-'90s by reinventing material from the pop/rock and blues worlds in her own distinctive style, with unconventional (for jazz) approaches to instrumentation and production.
