| | Transparent Horizons CD (2005) Import
$13.15 His drumming sometimes seems eccentric (particularly the sounds he achieves during his short solos) and the music ranges from thoughtful out-of-tempo stretches to post-bop swinging and free explorations. Drummer Stich Wynston (who plays piano on two numbers) leads a very flexible quartet through a set of group originals on Transparent Horizons. ~ Scott Yanow
Stich Wynston: Stich Wynston; Geoff Young (guitar); Jim Vivian (double bass); Mike Murley.
Personnel: Stich Wynston (piano, drums); Geoff Young (guitar); Mike Murley (saxophone); Jim Vivian (acoustic bass).
Audio Mixer: John "Beetle" Bailey.
Recording information: Lydian Sound, Richmond Hill, Ontario, Canada (09/09/2003).
About the artist: Two of the highlights of Stich's musical education took place at Toronto's York University. First was his study of South Indian Classical music with Trichy Sankaran, second was his study of 20th Century Classical music with James Tenney, particularly Arnold Schoenberg's piano piece 'Opus 11'. This unpredictable music grows in interest with each listen and comes across as fresh and new, while still being tied to the tradition. Tenor saxophonist Mike Murley is always an impressive player, and he is matched in the solo department by guitarist Geoff Young and Jim Vivian, who often bows his bass.
