Shattered Existence CD (1989)

"Balance of Power," "Reasons for Destruction," "Dark Enemy" and other songs on this invigorating CD demonstrate that while Artist could be bone-crushing, the thrashers weren't nearly as extreme as some of the other bands on Roadrunner (such as Obituary and Deicide). Headbangers who can get into Metallica, Anthrax and Megadeth but may not care for grindcore will also find Artist accessible, as well as exciting. However, this isn't to say that Artist actually emulated Anthrax or anyone -- as Shattered Existence reminds us, Artist wasn't without a sound of its own. It isn't a bad comparison -- like Anthrax, Artist doesn't shy away from heavy subject matter, but also knows how to have fun. The album, "Shattered Existence", was recorded and mixed in nippy 14 days with the producer John Cuniberti bringing the best out of both the band and their material. Perhaps best known for their thrash metal interpretation of Ray Parker, Jr.'s "Ghostbusters," Artist often found itself compared to Anthrax more than anyone. While "No Compromise", "Dark Enemy" and "Back In The Real World" show that you can play fast and in a controlled manner at the same time. Of the newer tracks, the likes of "Position of Security", "Crimes" and "Balance Of Power" proved that Artist could stand up against anything else the U.K. thrash scene had to offer. ~ Alex Henderson
