Stan Kenton - Swing Era DVD (1940)
STAN KENTON discography Compiling clips from a variety of sources, this tribute to jazz bandleader Stan Keaton offers a precise summation of his many talents. Having fully overhauled conventional big band practices, Kenton is regarded as an innovator who took giant steps within the jazz world. Much of the footage featured here is taken from the Kenton Orchestra era of the 1940s, providing a fascinating historical document of a bygone era for the genre.
One of the most controversial musicians in jazz during his lifetime, bandleader Artist (1911-1979) has become something of a cult figure, and is now justly considered as one of the men who renovated the big-band idiom during the forties and fifties. This DVD showcases different clips featuring the great Kenton Orchestra of the 1940s, playing hits such as Eager Beaver, Tampico, or Artistry In Rhythm. The DVD is completed with an interesting selection of soundies from other 'modern' big bands of the day, headed by Charlie Barnet, Les Brown and Claude Thornhill.

Golson/Hayes/Kenton - Symphonic Jazz DVD (1966)
STAN KENTON CD discography This pair of jazz concerts offer a privileged look at some of big-band's greatest players. Included here are a 1962 Los Angeles concert by Artist and his orchestra, and a 1966 London concert by Benny Golson leading the British Orchestra, with Tubby Hayes on tenor sax.
NTSC/Region 0. The pairing of Artist (in a 19s performance) and Benny Golson (filmed in 1966) on this DVD might seem strange. However, all of the music heard on this DVD has a certain unity of conception, for all tracks are performed by big bands in which the arrangements seem if not more, at least in equal importance to the improvised solos. That's of course one of the characteristics of the Artist sound, which put emphasis on jazz composition and featured such noted composers and arrangers as Pete Retool, Bill Russo, Gerry Mulligan and Shorty Rogers. Benny Golson, on the other hand, is not featured as performer on the set included here, but as composer, arranger and conductor, leading a group labeled as the British Orchestra. As a bonus, we have added three more tunes by Artist taken from a 1971 TV show. Oh!vation.
