STAN KENTON albums The second of the six Hindsight Artist LPs covers the same early period as the first. Tenor-saxophonist Red Dorris and trumpeter Chico Alvarez are the main soloists while Kenton's arrangements (including the four part "Suite for Saxophones") are the main reason that this orchestra gained such a loyal following. No other big band sounded like it and, although its sound would evolve and change (the emphasis in the early days was on the saxophone section led by altoist Jack Ordean), the performances by Artist's first orchestra can easily be enjoyed by the fans of his later bands. These formerly rare performances are taken from radio transcriptions and contain many songs not otherwise recorded by Kenton. ~ Scott Yanow

STAN KENTON discography This double album is pretty definitive of Artist's later orchestras. Few of the musicians ever became even minor names; not counting veteran saxophonist Willie Maiden, trumpeters Mike Vax and Warren Gale, trombonist Dick Shearer and drummer John Von Ohlen are the only recognizable players. The arrangements are generally workmanlike and sometimes dramatic but rarely memorable (those of Bill Holman and...

STAN KENTON songs Hindsight has released six Artist LPs originating from noncommercial sources. The first volume, taken from various radio transcriptions cut during 1941, gives one an interesting look at the early Kenton orchestra including performances of many songs that were not otherwise recorded by the innovative bandleader....

Solo: Stan Kenton Without His Orchestra Vinyl LP (1973)

STAN KENTON albums This LP was Artist's only solo piano record of his career, and it's a disappointment. Kenton was never a virtuoso but he had an Earl Hines-inspired style and was capable of much better than this introspective and wandering outing. There are some moments of interest...
