Uncollected Stan Kenton & His Orchestra, Vol. 2 Vinyl LP (1966)
STAN KENTON albums The second of the six Hindsight Artist LPs covers the same early period as the first. Tenor-saxophonist Red Dorris and trumpeter Chico Alvarez are the main soloists while Kenton's arrangements (including the four part "Suite for Saxophones") are the main reason that this orchestra gained such a loyal following. No other big band sounded like it and, although its sound would evolve and change (the emphasis in the early days was on the saxophone section led by altoist Jack Ordean), the performances by Artist's first orchestra can easily be enjoyed by the fans of his later bands. These formerly rare performances are taken from radio transcriptions and contain many songs not otherwise recorded by Kenton. ~ Scott Yanow
